Analytical Essay # 115858 :: Egyptian Culture and Music
This paper looks at the aspect of music and poetry as a part of Egyptian culture.
Written in 2009; 1,769 words; 3 sources; MLA; $ 57.95
Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer notes that ancient Egyptian culture presents historians as well as artists with a myriad of examples in music, song and poetry represented on funeral monuments, sarcophagus, and tomb chambers. The writer discusses that Egyptian culture was obsessed with burial rituals and thus, funerary materials are the best-kept and representational works by which to base the conglomerate nature of Egyptian art. The writer presents the correlated artistic persuasion of Egyptian nature in both poetry and music as well as discusses in depth the lyric poem which made its way into Egyptian Dynasties 18-20 during the New Kingdom era 1550-1080 BC. The writer concludes that there is substantial evidence of music and poetry being an integral and fundamental aspect of Egyptian life and culture.
From the Paper:
"This artwork pictures the chanting of a harpist making laudations for the death and life of Ramesses. This musical performance is taking place before the god Shu. Shu is a representation of the spatial existence between earth and heaven.
"The painting is pure symbolism so that every object is there to give credence to a belief. To emphasize this point, Shu is wearing a headdress of ostrich feathers and is bearing a scepter, which together symbolizes authority or supremacy. The key ankh symbolizes lasting life. All of this takes place while a harpist is lauding about the Pharaoh to a god, which in turn represents how important musical instruments were in Egypt. If the instrument is permissible as a transcendental object by which the Pharaoh is recognized by Shu, then it is proven to be essential in funerary rites, and the passage to the underworld."
