Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the subject of online infidelity. The author talks about the perspective that people have concerning online cheating, pointing out that one of the biggest problem with the issue is the lack of an agreed upon definition concerning what constitutes infidelity within the world of technology. The paper examines how four different forms of reality, vernacular, extended, constructed, and projected, can be influenced within the domain of the Internet within the context of online infidelity.
From the Paper:
"It is this very form of online relationships that makes them subject to debate as to whether or not they actually conform to the preconceived notions of infidelity. This lack of consensus on infidelity within the domain of the Internet also impacts an individual's perception of their vernacular reality due to the fact that within the 'here and now' they may not consider their behaviour to be a betrayal of the marital contract due to the lack of any true inmate contact with another person. Despite this lack of the 'in-person' dimension of online relationships, participants are still directing their time, thought, actions, and in many cases, intimacy towards an individual or object that is separate from their spouse or partner. This distraction can have negative impacts on a relationship, and thus, the distortion of the vernacular reality can be very harmful to a marriage or relationship."
