500 words (approx. 2 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2002

Paper Summary:

The following paper deals with this question of how one can resist tyranny by examining how organizations and individuals resisted tyranny during and after World War II with particular reference to the novels 'Men and not Men', by Elio Vittorini and 'The Luneweburg Variation', by Paolo Maurensig.

From the Paper:

"What occurs when an individual is subject to the stresses of a dictatorial regime? Some people such as Hannah Arendt, in her nonfiction work Eichmann in Jerusalem, have suggested that any active mental or physical resistance to tyranny is virtually impossible, if one is locked in the dictatorial system and mindset. In the form of fiction, George Orwell in 1984 has also suggested a similar concept. This essay will examine how the fictional form can pose more complex answers to this very difficult and disturbing question. In the novels Men and not Men, by Elio Vittorini and The Luneweburg Variation, by Paolo Maurensig, this question of how can one resist tyranny is posed in the form of how organizations and individuals resisted tyranny during and after World War II."
