Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer looks at different influences on culture. The writer maintains that perhaps the most important factor that influences cultural identity is environment. No matter where someone was born, they have a culture, and the environment in which they were raised shaped part of that culture. The writer discusses that another cultural trait that is transmitted through environment, and is not always recognized, is members of a culture sharing common knowledge. Culture is not only learned from our environment, but is also passed down from generation to generation by families. Values and morals are also passed down from generation to generation. The writer points out that events can have a profound impact on culture as well as environment and family. The writer concludes that culture has many aspects and it changes with the times and generations.
From the Paper:
"If a civilization were a canvas, culture would undoubtedly be its paint. Culture, the building block of society, can be seen by many as some kind of mysterious engine inside of people. The key turns at the moment of birth and from then on tells us how to speak, how to interact, and what to believe. Others are partial to the idea that culture is simply a matter of choice. That it is as simple as choosing the cultural identity which best suits one's preferences. No, both of these views are far too narrow to explain culture. Culture is not static, and is not chosen by the individual, but is transmitted through our environment, passed down by family, and influenced by events."
