From the Paper:
"Flannery O Conner s story Good Country People illustrates how we try to cover up how we are really hurting inside by unusual behaviors with many traits that tell the reader that underneath the calmness lays a world full of hurt and pain. Mrs. Hopewell s desire for everyone to be good country people is a cover up for the uncertainty she feels about her own life. She feels she does not fit in because of her daughter s unusual behavior. Even though, Mrs. Hopewell is not embarrassed of Hulga s education, Mrs. Hopewell wants to tell people her daughter is a nurse or a teacher instead of a philosopher. Hulga s education and coldness is used as a cover up for her uncertainness in life."
