A review of James Morrow's "Towing Jehovah," which concerns the death of God.
831 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 3 sources | MLA | 2004

Paper Summary:

This paper presents a theological discussion regarding the death of God as is illustrated in the book, "Towing Jehovah," written by James Morrow. The paper describes God as a symbol and relates what occurs when there is no further use of that symbol. The paper examines the theories presented by Paul Tillich in his paper, "The Reality of God," in an attempt to better understand Morrow's book.

From the Paper:

"With James Morrow's Towing Jehovah, humankind's greatest symbol has ceased to be and has fallen into the Atlantic, God is dead. How could such a thing happen? One theorist that helps explain this is Paul Tillich in his paper "The Reality of God". Towing Jehovah confirms the existence of God and then tries to decipher why He is dead and what happens next. Tillich reasoning can be applied to God in a physical form by his statement, "If God is [a] being, he is subject to the categories of finitude, especially to space and substance." (Tillich 88.) This can help us understand how God is in a true physical state. God within Towing Jehovah is a physical being but also a symbol."
