The writer discusses a plan to resurrect a dilapidated baseball stadium and explains that while many of the townspeople were pleased to keep the revenue-generating attraction in town, others were worried about the negative changes that would result. The writer looks at D.I. Wann and S.I. Pierce's research where they reveal the long-term psychological benefits of the revitalization of an area for its residents. The writer therefore posits that although there will be some short-term negative effects as the renovations take place, the long-term benefits of the project far outweigh these inconveniences.
From the Paper:
"When the local Triple-A baseball team announced recently that it was planning to resurrect the increasingly dilapidated baseball stadium that had long been the defining characteristic of my working-class neighborhood rather than move to a newer stadium planned for a nearby town, the local reactions were mixed. On the one hand, many of the townspeople were pleased with the decision to keep this revenue-generating attraction in the town; the team was in many ways a cultural fixture of the region generally and of our town more specifically, so keeping it local did bode well for the kind of regional identification and branding that is so important in today's economy."
