"Coming of Age in Mississippi"

"Coming of Age in Mississippi"
A report on Anne Moody's autobiographical novel.
2,160 words (approx. 8.6 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

Anne Moody was born to poor African-American parents in Mississippi in the early 1940s. Her parents were hard-working people, but jobs were scarce for blacks in Mississippi during this era. This paper shows that, from her parents, Moody learned a strong work ethic, and it became a major theme of her life, as well as of her autobiography, entitled, "Coming of Age in Mississippi".

From the Paper:

"Additionally, the white children were permitted to sit in preferred seats on the ground floor, while the blacks were made to sit in the balcony. With her sharp intellect, Moody studied this situation closely, trying to determine what factors made the difference. She could not believe that skin color was the determining variable, and so the innocent deduction this child made was that the difference must involve something that people typically could not see -- some distinction in the most private areas of the body. Devising a "doctor game," Moody was able to examine her white friends as well as her black ones, but she could see no difference save color."
