↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This study provides an analysis of the factors that have contributed to the incidence of obesity in the United States in recent years, particularly among young people. The paper evaluates the policy options of improving land use and transportation methods and recommends the solution of "performance-based regulation" of the food industry and municipalities in receipt of federal funds for environmental applications.

Abstract
Review and Discussion

From the Paper:

"Although more is known about the adverse health implications of being overweight today than ever before, this knowledge has done little to stem the increasing incidence of obesity across the country. More sedentary lifestyles due to more children remaining indoors and playing video games and using the Internet, fundamental shifts in eating habits and higher caloric contents of food have all contributed to this increased incidence, and many Americans are suffering as a result. While the pundits continue to debate what should be done about this threat to public health, more and more young people are becoming obese and suffering the concomitant adverse health consequences that go hand in hand with being overweight. Unfortunately, these young people may also suffer from the stigma that is associated with being obese in a society that has traditionally prized physical fitness and personal appearance."
