Chaucer's Monk and Prioress

Chaucer's Monk and Prioress
An analysis of the monk and prioress characters in Chaucer's work "Canterbury Tales".
1,450 words (approx. 5.8 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper studies two of the characters from the 14th century "Canterbury Tales" by Chaucer. The author of the paper presents an overview of each character and then contrasts the two and Chaucer's motivation for including them in the story. The paper discusses the characters as a metaphor for the animosity between the Roman Catholics and the Jews, and also looks at how they provide insights into the early development of the novel form.

From the Paper:

"A Prioress, Madame Eglantine, was a gentlewoman, cultured and delicate and coy of manner. She was careful about her appearance and sensitive to the feelings of others. She had courtly manners toward her companions and had a friendly nature, always considerate of the others. She wore a gold brooch that said "amor vincit omnia." ("Love conquers all")"
