Paper Summary:
This paper lays out a biography for Gilman and also compares her life to the life of the narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper".
From the Paper:
"Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in Hartford, Connecticut on July 3, 1860. She had a brother who was 14 months older than her. Her mother, Mary Fitch Westcott lost two other children in infancy and was advised not to have any more children. Gilman's father, Fredric Beecher Perkins, left the family after his wife received the news. (womenwriters.com). Mary and her children were in a constant state of poverty and were forced to live with relatives. Among these relatives were her great-aunts Catherine Beecher who was an advocate of domestic feminism, Harriet Beecher Stowe who penned Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Isabella Beecher Hooker who was a suffragist. Prior to the time when he left the family completely, Gilman's father was often absent throughout his daughter's childhood. After her father left, Charlotte had no contact with him. Her mother was hesitant to display love to her children, in order to toughen them up, but would occasionally hold them as they slept. Charlotte would sometimes stay awake to experience this display of affection (Kirjasto.sci.fi/gilman.htm). Her parents' strained marriage was a contributing factor to Charolette's negative opinion of marriage."
