# 145301
An analysis of the characters of Marianne and Elinor Dashwood in Jane Austen's novel "Sense and Sensibility".
859 words (approx. 3.4 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2010 | United States
Published on: Nov 02, 2010

Paper Summary:

The paper explains how Elinor represents a pragmatic style and a penchant for logic and reason, while Marianne is prone to strong emotions and often rushes to judgment. The paper further shows how Elinor respects certain mores of her society, while Marianne expresses her feelings freely without consideration. The paper demonstrates how these differences affect their lives as young women in the nineteenth century.

From the Paper:

"Marianne's sensibility is easier to detect and describe throughout the episodes of the novel. She is prone to strong emotions that are sometimes ungoverned and she is disconcerted with the constraints that society places upon her. She is straightforward and she expresses her feelings freely without a consideration for the mores of the society in which she lives. She believes that expressions similar to that of a woman catching a man are abhorrent, stating they are "common-place" (Austen 60) and '"setting one's cap at a man,' or 'making a conquest,' are the most odious of all. Their tendency is gross and illiberal; and if their construction could ever be deemed clever, time has long ago destroyed all its ingenuity" (60). She is opinionated and prone to make decisions based upon her emotions rather than logic or reason."
