900 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 1 source | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper explores the perceptions of marriage and of social conventions in James Baldwin's classic novel "Giovanni's Room", that existed at the time of Baldwin's writing to demonstrate why the main character of David was so passionately unhappy. It is shown that David is only truly happy when he is in an emotional relationship with men, but he strongly believes that he must be married to a woman and begin a family in order to be happy.
