Wright Mills felt compelled to criticize many of the social sciences developments he observed in the nineteen-fifties, for he saw many of these developments as threats to the ability of the social sciences to benefit humanity. In his opinion, social scientists of this era were hindering the emergence of true freedom in society by adhering to conformist theories and encouraging a robot-like acceptance of established authority. For Mills, the sociological imagination he wanted people to develop would fulfill the vast potential he saw in sociology."
