This paper discusses to what extent the character and direction of migration from the British Isles to North America significantly changed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

"To show how the extent of this migration changed we shall have to consider: English society at the time and reasons for migration; take a brief look at North America itself; and then consider the character and direction of the migration in each of the four regions, and of course how it changed over time. To develop a deeper understanding of the character of migration it would then also be useful to think about the settled societies that the migration created. We must also be very aware that there has never been any sort of broad consensus regarding the timing or the numbers of settlers, and so we place are argument amongst some certain conjecture."
