The paper looks closely at Chinua Achebe's novel "Anthills of the Savannah", a masterful tale of the very human effects of the corruption of government.
This paper looks at the novel as it explores the issues of independence in Kangan and the ensuing cultural conflict and difficulties of forming a new government. The writer studies the main characters and how each contributes to the overall message of the story.
From the Paper:
"Ikem is more of a visionary than the rest of his colleagues. He doesn't believe that the government will work as it is and has no hope for the people in charge. Ikem sees the level of corruption in the government and doesn't feel that it will help for him to be involved in it, "from the inside." He is a great writer, a poet, and an artist. This relates to his high standard of commitment to public service. Ikem believes in ideals in and of themselves. The government should be run for the people, not for the elite few, and doesn't want to be part of a government that's not for the people. But you also see in Ikem's speech to the Student Union that he isn't just critical of the government, he's critical of the people too. He sees how things should be on all levels, but also knows that they will never be that way, so he does what he feels is right for himself. He contributes in the best way he knows how: by writing and observing. That speech is one of the highlights of the novel. Ikem sums up the problem of the government perfectly. Who should be in power? The elite? No, because they'll work in their own best interest."
