"Birth control is not a modern invention and has a long history, and written records of birth control methods survive from ancient times, with writings from ancient Egypt, the classical period in Greece and Rome, and from the tenth century in Arab medicine. By 1900 all the methods of birth control now in use, with the exception of oral contraceptives, were understood and used in Europe and North America. The first to be developed was the condom, the origin of which is a matter of some argument, though the earliest published description is from 1564 (Encyclopedia Britannica 113-114). Birth control in the American context can be traced from colonial times to the present, with different social attitudes governing the methods used as well as the acceptance of their use.
