Paper Summary:
This paper presents an analysis of Toni Morrison's novel,"Beloved". The paper focuses on the morality of Sethe's choice to "save" her daughter from the horrors of slavery by killing her and the guilt and denial she experiences as a result.
From the Paper:
"The question is whether she acted out of true concern for her child or selfish regard for herself. Did she kill her baby because she wanted to save it from slavery, or because she refused to reenter a life of slavery for herself? With all the horrors the slaves are subjected to in the novel, it is easy to understand why Sethe would do anything to protect her child from them. But one has to wonder if killing the baby could really be in its best interest. Is it better that the child has a life of hardship and suffering, or no life at all? This is a difficult question that can easily lead to a debate on abortion, but that is not the issue here."
