Analyzes the relationship of belief and emotion as presented by philosophers of cognitive science.

Paper Summary:
This paper asks, "Is not the existence of passions as grounds for beliefs indicative of some sort of justification?" After looking at various philosophical positions, the author concludes that, for beliefs based on reasons of logic, there is the need for some amount of Cartesian clarity about how the mind perceives its own content and verifies it. Whereas, for reasons of the heart, there is instead something left open for resolution. The paper also reviews the psychological processes underlying personal self-knowledge, which are contained in the memories of past experiences and for which people have their personality traits.
From the Paper:
"Any kind of emotion necessarily entails some value judgment since emotions are usually about something. What Clifford probably means in his famous statement was that value judgments are unjustified unless they are based on empirical evidence or sense experience and logic. Emotional experiences then have no place in making value judgments sound. However, if emotions are more like symbols for our orientation towards objects then they are possible on par with language."
