Paper Summary:
This paper presents an analysis of Dickinson's poem, "Because I Could not Stop for Death". The paper offers possible interpretations and focuses on the Christian theology reflected in the piece.
From the Paper:
"The fourth stanza begins ?Or rather-He (the sun) passed Us-?, making the distinction between the movement of the speaker and the world important. It is the world that is leaving the speaker behind, not the other way around. This supports the idea that death is not the end of existence, but a transition in one continuous life. The descriptions of the speaker's gown and tippet in lines 15 and 16 can be seen as a wedding dress and veil, providing support for Anderson's matrimonial interpretation."
