Paper Summary:
This paper explains that DaSilva presents an excellent overview of the Bible as a literary and historical work, as its title might suggest. It also points out how it provides a refreshing combination of scholarly insight and deeply felt exegesis about the ministry and teaching methods of the figure of Jesus, and how to interpret this figure in a series of different gospel contexts. The writer explains that DaSilva begins his work by painting a multifaceted portrait of the Roman world of Jesus' time, including the debates within Judaism of Jesus' day, and the contrasting ancient Roman and Greek pagan beliefs. Before even beginning to analyze the Bible, DaSilva helps readers understand the often-fraught world that produced the Bible, and the culture that produced the Hebraic texts before the New Testament books were written.
From the Paper:
"Exegesis can be a revelatory, rather than a deconstructive process, as it reveals how apparent differences in the text are examples of textual depth and richness rather than contradictions. The book affirms why the New Testament has the construction it has today, in its choice of books and sequence in the Christian tradition and why the fourfold narrative about nature of Jesus is a particularly helpful notion. Through understanding Jesus in the exegetical tradition, his ministry becomes a way of encouraging a subject to see things from all sides, rather than just his or her side, during counseling. If God shows his own Son from a variety of perspectives to the Apostles, surely we can look at our own problems from he perspective of another, in our own different but often equally troubled yet rich historical context!"
