"American Express was established in 1850 in New York, in response to the westward expansion and necessity of express delivery. American Express began as an express company, their business the forwarding of freight and valuables, which was a price competitor with the slower and less extensive United States Postal Service. This evolved into the creation and sale of financial products such as money orders and checks, the branch of which was established in 1882. They then, through consistent business with Europe which built their reputation, launched their first European office in Paris, during 1895, establishing relationships with banks which would prove profitable and also the building blocks of a vast European financial structure."
