"Since the publication of the articles by Herbert Muschamp and Larry Silverstein, discussion has continued about how America should use the former World Trade Center site to memorialize the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. This is a sensitive issue and was bound to generate controversy, for the feelings of an entire nation have to be taken into account. Herbert Muschamp, the architecture critic from the New York Times, expressed his belief that most of the designs "offer an excess of spectacle" and observed that, "everything here is wonderfully polished." He concluded that each finalist could be the winner in a dozen memorial competitions, but stated, "that is not really a compliment, is it?"
