930 words (approx. 3.7 pages) | 3 sources | MLA | 2004 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that George Orwell's "1984" contains just enough truth to be a compelling warning for future generations. The author reports that psychologist Erich Fromm succinctly points out the dangers of becoming too comfortable with the notion of moving forward. What appears to be good may only be 'Big Brother' in disguise. The paper stresses that our society may be becoming like Oceania because surveillance cameras are practically everywhere.

From the Paper:

"However, Fromm sees things in a different way. He observes that at the start of modern development, man was full of hope and when those very hopes become realities, man loses that hope. Fromm claims that the society, which "1984" depicts, is exactly where we are headed. Our society is presented as "being one of free initiative, individualism and idealism, when in reality, these are just words. We are a centralized managerial industrial society." This is an interesting statement, especially when we compare aspects of our society to the dystopia Oceania."
